Who Says that Pilates is Simply for Women?

Do men do Pilates? Yes, yes, yes! In fact, one-third of my clientele is male.

Did they all come to Pilates feeling excited and confident in their abilities to bend, flex, twist and balance? Absolutely not! Most of them came with the encouragement of their spouses or a medical professional. Almost all of them had back pain on a very regular basis, which had caused them to have to miss work or other activities due to the discomfort they endured. Doing Pilates has resulted in less back for all of these guys.

So what is it about Pilates that helps so much? Think back to being a child. The younger you were the more you moved. You spent more time on the ground, rolling, crawling, running, jumping, tumbling, and sitting. Then we start having more responsibility and commitment! School, school and more school. Work, driving, parenting and less active movement. Here you are now, with an aching back, running is hard, and a somersault sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

Why Pilates though? Because Pilates gets you back to moving your body in all directions. Starting with the most basic fundamental movements. These movements will, first of all, help you feel less pain, working towards feeling little to no pain. The bonus to this is that you will start building strength so that we can progressively add on more and more challenging elements to each exercise.

Is Pilates the end all and the be all for movement? Absolutely not. It is a fabulous compliment to every sport and activity out there though. Start Pilates to get you moving like your old self. Keep doing Pilates to keep moving that way and to help you in your other activities, whether that be walking your dog, climbing ladders at work, golfing, hunting or playing hockey.

If you want to reduce aches and pains, in particular, back pain and get back to being more active, our Pilates Strong – Pilates for Men Series is for you.
