Why I ask you to do an “Introduction to Pilates” Series

It often surprises my clients that I ask them to do the Intro to Pilates series or do the Mat Pilates for Beginners program on my app. They want to get going, jump in, and start feeling better right away! This is even more true of clients who are familiar with fitness or take part in other sports. Won’t a beginner’s class be boring?

Well, I certainly hope that my classes aren’t boring! But more than that, taking an introduction to Pilates class is essential for you to get the most from your Pilates practice right from the beginning.

4 Reasons to do an Introduction to Pilates Program:

  1. Learn the fundamentals. Think of it like dancing; just because you’ve got rhythm and are a naturally good dancer doesn’t mean you can walk into a ballet class and follow along with first position, second position, and all of the choreography. Pilates exercises have specific names, and we talk a lot about how to move and hold your body. And boy, some movements take practice!
  2. Find modifications. When you learn from the ground up, you will learn to make modifications appropriate for your body. I love that Pilates can support people where they are at, while simultaneously helping them get stronger over time.
  3. Build up to it. In the beginner series we will start slowly and with only a few exercises.  We will add to those exercises each week, preparing you to be ready for the Sweat with Melissa classes. As we go, you will see that the first exercises in a mat class are actually mini versions of the exercises that come later. For example, “the hundred” is actually the base for “the teaser”.
  4. Get ready for more. When it comes down to it, the beginner series gets you ready for more. In an introductory program, you’ll become familiar, confident and comfortable with Pilates so you can then move on to classes.
