As I sat down to write this, I didn’t have a plan in mind. My mind kept drifting back to all of the things I want to get done over the next few days and the remainder of the winter break. I realized that I’m feeling anxious and stressed, something that happens to me leading up to something fun and exciting. Right now it’s Christmas, but it can happen before birthdays, graduations, and even vacations. The thing is, everything always works out in the end and I have a great time… as long as I remember to take care of myself! It’s time to turn to my tried-and-true ways to relieve stress, so I can recharge and enjoy the days to come.
The Best Ways to Relieve Stress
- Accept Invitations (but not all of them). There are so many options for holiday activities and socializing this time of year, that it’s easy to get burnt out. Say “yes” to the things that you know you’ll enjoy, and “no” to the ones that feel like too much. Be present and enjoy the break, and leave your to-do list at home. Who knows, maybe the night out will inspire that dinner you’ve been worried about planning.
- Get Enough Sleep. I’m great at falling asleep watching tv or even in the movie theatre, but once I get on a roll doing things like cleaning, cooking, or wrapping gifts I can keep on going. This can lead to late nights. If you aren’t getting enough sleep at night, take a nap! I’ll curl up on the couch or even crawl into bed for an hour. Just be sure to set your alarm! I’m much more productive and pleasant to be around if I have enough sleep.
- Take a Bath or Long Shower. The shower is my thinking spot. I’d say it’s been my escape since I had children, but my dad would beg to differ. I was always the one being yelled at as a teen to “get out of the shower!” I’d think it had only been five minutes, but would be informed that it was a half-hour. I get lost when I’m in there, kind of like when I draw.
- Eat Regular Meals. I’m normally very consistent with my meals, but when routine goes out the window, well… it can be easy to say “I’ll do one more errand”, and then I’ve skipped lunch. This leads to headaches and no energy. I’ve learned to keep a few snacks in the car if I’m busy, and if I’m feeling crabby to stop and eat.
- Go Outside. Fresh air and moving my body outside do wonders for my mood. It wakes me up, clears my mind, and gets me away from the chaos for a bit. The dog is begging me right now to take her for a walk, and I feel guilty when she doesn’t get to go… time to lace up my shoes!
- Finish Prepping Early. I remember being up until 2 am a few times on Christmas Eve, finishing all the last-minute things while Craig snored on the couch. It wasn’t worth it. Now, I get my wrapping and at least some food prep done a few days in advance. It’s so much nicer being able to relax before the “big day”.
- Exercise. When I do a workout, I can feel the weight of my shoulders lift. It’s the best way for me to destress and relieve any anxiety. Twenty minutes of movement can be enough to help me reset for the rest of the day. Here are some easy ways to fit in a workout during the holidays.
Feeling stressed or a bit anxious around the holidays is normal, but it shouldn’t disrupt your entire life or stop you from doing the things you want. Taking time for yourself to relieve stress will help you be more productive, and allow you to enjoy the holidays.
