Runners run because they love something about it. It may be the time alone to think or free your mind; the people you run with; the sweat; the competition; the weight you lose. We also, as runners, know the things about running that we do not love. Those aches and pains that can sideline us or set us back in our training.
Commonly, runners notice that they get sore feet, which can occur due to overuse, improperly fitted shoes, increased volume or intensity too soon, and even tight calves or hamstrings. Plantar Fasciitis often plagues runners as well and can be extremely painful. Outside of running, we generally wear shoes a large part of the day walking on a solid flat surface most of the time. Our feet become tight, you may have bunions or toes that curl and tuck under on another which can also make walking or running somewhat painful.
There are some great Pilates tools and exercises that can help you to build strength and flexibility in your feet. There is the foot corrector, the toe tensometer, the foot bar on the reformer and simply the foot positions in the mat work all of which can help to relieve you of those foot aches and build a stronger foundation for the rest of your body to stand on.
On Saturday, September 15, 2018, we are holding our 2nd Pilates for Runners Workshop with a focus on the feet. We will explore and practice some of the foot exercises that can be done with the toe tensometer as well as find awareness of how we are using our feet during a basic mat repertoire. You will come away from this workshop with the tools and knowledge to be able to do a Pilates basic mat workout in between runs and your other workouts.
