The reasons why people start Pilates and personal training at b.Pilates & Fitness varies, but tends to come down to the following seven reasons. They have:
- Back pain on a regular basis.
- Had surgery and been okayed to move on from physical therapy to Pilates.
- Regular headaches or migraines.
- Been advised by a medical professional to strengthen their core.
- Neck or shoulder pain.
- Had to stop or reduce doing activities that they love, such as running, due to injuries.
- The desire to improve their posture.
Many of these reasons are often intertwined with one another, and the general desire to simply feel better in their body. Plus, whatever they have been doing – physiotherapy, massage, working out on their own, or stretching, is just not cutting it anymore.
Why Your Body Needs Help
When your body isn’t working the way it should be, it will give you signals – like headaches or back pain. In more extreme cases, injuries or surgery are the big red flag.
No two people are the same, but generally, it is an imbalance within the body that is causing the problems. Weak core, glutes and back. Tight hamstrings or pectoral muscles. Sitting too often. Overuse. Even past accidents or chronic health conditions can push your body into a muscular imbalance.
When your body is out of alignment or imbalanced, it needs help to relearn how to move the way it is meant to. A professional can identify where the imbalances lie, and help you not only correct them, but teach you to become aware of what your body is telling you.
We Start at the Beginning
No matter the reason why people start Pilates and personal training at b.Pilates & Fitness, we start at the beginning. This is because I believe in teaching you about how your body works, why we do certain movements, and how to modify things for your specific needs and goals. Fitness is not one size fits all!
By working together one-on-one in the beginning, you will have the fundamental movements down, so that when you choose to move into a group setting, you will be able to follow along while knowing what your own body needs.
We cover things such as good spinal alignment and basic movement patterns – flexion, extension, rotation. It is about knowing where your body is in space, so you can feel the difference between say, a good hip hinge and a poor one. Sometimes this means using equipment or props to find good form, especially when you are particularly tight or dealing with an injury.
Retraining & Healing Your Body is a Beautiful Journey
I think that the fitness journey is a beautiful thing. Once we get started and you know the fundamentals, we continue to build on where you are starting from. Yes, it will take time. It quite possibly took you years to acquire the pain or injury that brings you to b.Pilates & Fitness, so making positive changes will take awhile as well. No matter what, you will feel better for moving your body in new ways, and pushing yourself to make positive changes.
And remembember, everyone working out next to you is on their own journey. Some moves that come easy to you may be their greatest challenge, while you struggle with something that they make look simple. I’ve found lifelong friends while working out, as we challenge each other to keep going and do better.
