6 Ways to Get Outside During the Holidays

This year has had us staying home a whole lot more than ever before. But now that we all have time off for the winter break, it is easier to fit in some outdoor adventures. Here are six of my family’s favourite ways to get outside during the holidays.

Creative Ways to Get Outside During the Holidays

Living on the south coast of BC, we are blessed with mild winter weather while still being close enough to the local mountains when we need a dose of snow. There’s no shortage of outdoor activities here, no matter what season it is.

  1. My husband and I meet up with another couple once a week to go for a run, followed by breakfast. The adventure sometimes is trying out a new location for the run, while other times it is trying out a new spot for breakfast.
  2. Wait until dark for all the Christmas lights to be on, bundle up, and go for a walk to enjoy the beautiful displays. It feels like everyone has done a bit “extra” to brighten up 2020. There is even a house on our street that plays Christmas music!
  3. Head to the mountains to ski or snowboard. My family loves to ski and snowboard, and we have enjoyed so many fabulous days on the mountain together.
  4. Not into flying down the mountain? Try snowshoeing! I went for my first time a few years ago and loved it. It’s a good workout and fun! The coffee and hot chocolate at the end is a definite must.
  5. Visit a mountain without snow. I’ve been trailing running for several years now and am thrilled that my husband and sister decided to join me this year too. My daughters and dog are loving going for hikes through our local trails. Finding beautiful lookouts and hidden waterfalls always makes the outing that much better.
  6. Golf is something that my husband and I did together pre-children. He kept it up and I didn’t, but now that our kids are older they occasionally join him. If the weather is too cold or wet to play, head to the driving range to hit a few balls. It’s a good way to bond and get some fresh air.

Find Motivation to Get Off the Couch

Since I work from home, I know how easy it is to get caught up with work and chores then never get outside. And during the holidays, it is so tempting to stay in your jammies and watch another episode of the latest Netflix show. I also know that going outside gives my energy and mood a boost. There is something about being outdoors that makes me feel refreshed and reset for the next “thing” on my to-do list.

I find that wearing an activity watch to count my steps each day is a good motivator and reminder to keep moving. (I just got the Garmin Vivoactive 4s and I love it!) From experience, I can say that almost all of these activities will help you get your steps in each day.

Since we can’t get together as usual this holiday season, meeting friends (from a distance) outdoors is a great “excuse” to get up and get moving together. The added accountability that comes from making plans makes it even harder to break those promises to get outside.

You never know, perhaps you will start a new tradition as you get up and get outside during the holidays this year.
